About our Scale Workshop

Throwing Multi-Sectional Forms

Adam Keeling leads a three day practice-based throwing course aimed at proficient throwers who are looking to increase the scale of their work. During this course you will learn how to make multi-sectioned forms, as well as techniques to help throw larger weights of clay.

This course will be held in the Kiln Shed, which is a large purpose-built studio within our grounds at Whichford Pottery that allows plenty of space to practice and develop your work.

The course will be run by Adam Keeling, who is a Master Thrower and Production Director here at Whichford Pottery. He specialises in large-scale work and commission pieces and his work can be seen in gardens all over the country. The skills that he will share with you will be the same as he shares with our professional potters. These skills will help give you the confidence to form sectional pieces with ease and accuracy.

The principles of the techniques are introduced through a series of short demonstrations. The rest of the time will be spent practicing these techniques and getting through lots of clay! Help will be on hand every step of the way.

Aim of the Workshop: Gaining confidence in using larger weights of clay and/ or throwing multi-sectional forms.

The Workshop Covers:
- Advanced throwing techniques
- Centering larger weights of clay
- Throwing forms to exact measurements
- Joining sections and forming multi-sectioned pieces
- Learning to judge the limits of your material.
